Stort Books is owned and run by Carl & Val Waring. Books have always been our passion but have not always been our business. In a previous life we were lawyers and founded the solicitors practice of Waring & Co. In 2002 we decided to jump off the treadmill and do something that we actually enjoy – so we sold our solicitors practice and hey presto, Stort Books was born.

We are based in the leafy village of Great Hallingbury near to Bishops Stortford on the borders of Essex and Hertfordshire in England. Our company is named after the nearby River Stort that Carl often runs along the banks of, pursuing his other passion, that of running marathons.

As solicitors we prided ourselves on our client care – doing the very best for our clients and providing a friendly, yet professional approach to our work. That is something that we hope that we have brought with us into Stort Books.

Our extensive stock of many thousands of books covers all classifications from signed First Editions through to military books, biographies, fiction, sport, music, film and television... the list is endless. We are adding huge numbers of books each week.

You can browse through our selection of books and when you have found something that you wish to buy you can place it in your shopping cart and pay for your items through our Secure e-processing facilities with your debit or credit card. If you choose this option then you will be automatically taken to HSBC Banks secure card processing service where you will be able to input your card details secure in the knowledge that you are benefiting from some of the latest secure e-payment processing technology around. Many websites boast of being able to offer totally secure card transaction facilities when this is not actually the case. However by using the HSBC facilities that we employ, you have the security provided by one of the worlds largest banks.

Alternatively you can provide us with your card details over the telephone, by fax or by e-mail (if using e-mail we suggest you send via two messages). You can pay by cheque drawn on a UK Bank in £Sterling (GBP), by Paypal. If you are in any doubts about how you should best pay, then please contact us and ask for Val.

Once ordered, your books will be sent out the same day or on the next working day at the latest.
